Long time members of the club will be aware that due to the nature of the club as a haven for international vagabonds and chancers, we usually have a high turnover of players in the senior squads, as some lads arrive in Denmark chasing something blonde, and others depart seeking somewhere less dark and windy. Managing the B team especially has always required accepting this bi annual squad shuffle, and relishing the chance to get the new arrivals involved.

And yet...

We were struck last year as no one needs telling by the Covid pandemic. This has been tragic for many, frustrating for many more, and pretty poor for football. No fans in professional game, no Monday Night Football at Valby. Seasons cut short, party's postponed, and on the whole a bit of a spanner in the working of this great club. There were however 2 upsides to this upheaval. First, the handshake at the start of the game got skipped, so no more having to cut short the traditional 5 mins Celtic warm up to say god kamp 14 times to people who you really hope have a dårlig kamp. But more significantly, with people stuck in Denmark, unable to move to sunny paradises around the world, we managed to maintain a pretty much 100% consistent squad.

Celtic have always had proper players, but have always been held back by the constant bedding in of new players, and lads constantly away travelling. Well not in 2020/21! With this super squad the B's roared to their first ever trophy, winning the league having only lost 2 games. It was glorious.

Anyways, it seems the worst of it is mecifully over but now half the squads buggered off and we are back to doing that thing in the changing rooms where everyone goes round and says their name and you forget it immediately. With only 4 members of the title winning machine available we cast the net far and wide and welcomed 6 brand new faces to the green and white hoops. We were also playing the only team to beat us last season, so privately the management were fearing the worst.

The fears were unfounded however, as the boys fought well and gelled quicker than expected. Only a soft goal before half time seperated the teams, and we were unlucky not to have bagged a couple ourselves. The second half started well, however some of the new recruits were now feeling the efffects of a first competitive game of football in a long time, and bodies soon hit the floor. We quickly ran out of subs, and started rotating the least injured lads to hobble around for 10 mins at a time, even sticking one in goal to get another body on the pitch. Sporting scored with the last kick of the game on a breakaway to give them a flattering 2-0 win, but the new look B's did themselves proud.
