At an average age of 30+, the prospect of playing an U19 team is always a little worrying. Strength and nous can only compete with pace and fitness for so long, and with only one sub there was a distinct chance that the eternal energy of youth could have overwhelmed an experienced Celtic side. As it happened, Celtic had the best of the chances first half, capitalising on heavy touches to force a few saves from the large but nimble opposition keeper. Birkerod had one chance all half, which they finished well.
Celtic pushed again second half, and around 20 mins in the deserved equaliser came. Nik won and converted a pen, and the lads pushed on for a winner. Once again however, the opposion broke and converted their only real chance of the half. It looked for all the world that the game would get away from the lads, but with 3 mins to go the collective wisdom of lads born the other side of the millenium coalesced, with 37 year old Colin launching a Burnley-esque ball from the edge of his own box, over the back line for 35 year old Joe, who dinked the onrushing keeper with a coolness that personified the Celtic performance.
The fresh faced opposition seemed to panic, and charged forward from the kick off desperate to recover their lead like a boxer who's just been floored that starts throwing in haymakers. Clearly these lads had played too much FIFA, and the all out attack was just what the green and white hoops needed. New keeper Antoine, after a fine save, launched a Colin-esque ball perfectly beyond the over-extended Birkerod backline. Joe again rushed onto the ball, dinked the keeper from further out than his first, and this time with the outside of the foot, and sealed a last minute victory that, despite the last minute nature of the goals, was a deserved 3 points for the lads.
The young lads from Birkerod undoubtedly learnt a valuable lesson in route one football!
